Agricultural Extension:
The agricultural extension service serves an important part of the equine business that often gets over looked. People have this idea in their mind that the AG extension is back woods, but in reality you can learn a lot from the AG extension.
The AG extension consists of:
-4-H
-FFA (Future Farmers of America)
This is what makes up the Agricultural Extension. It is the use of scientific research and new knowledge through farmer education to further agricultural practices. The extension service can be seminars, publication, and which 4-H it is a lot of hands on live stock and produce work that anyone can join.
I think that 4-H especially plays a huge part in giving kids an opportunity to learn responsibility and learn how to care out things outside of themselves. These services are made so that they can be easily understood and can be easily achieved. Through the AG extension, I was given an example of one in our class which gave me extremely easy to follow guide to boarding, nutrition, health programs, safety, liability, manure management, risk management, and a budget. These are all useful tools when wanting to get started in the equine world.
You can find the AG extension all over the US, however all of them will be slightly different as to what they will be dealing with environment wise. This way you can analyze a few different ones and see what works best for you. An example would be looking at the hay types varying from The Eastern coast as to the Western Coast. You can figure out what hay works best for you and apply it to your feeding.
Growing up in a predominately 4-H area, I wish I knew more about it and took more advantage of it earlier.
