Leading a Horse for Insection
Leading a Horse for inspection:
When leading the horse, it is important to understand the proper methods in which you need to correctly lead them. First, position the halter to that you can carefully place it over the horse’s head without bumping his eyes. Some halters have a cheek closure and others you have to unfasten the ear strap. Position the halter so it sits comfortably on his head, making sure it is not too tight or too lose. If a lead rope is not already attached, attach it at this time.
When leading the horse make sure you are an arms length distance away from the horse so you do not get stepped on. Always use two hands when leading the horse and always stand on the left side. Place your right hand about a foot away from where the lead attaches to the halter. Place the remaining rope in your left hand. NEVER coil the rope around your hand, fold the rope. If the lead rope has a chain on it, do not put your hand on the chain.
If you have to lead your horse with the bridle on, you’ll have to use the reins as the lead rope. Remember that there is a bit in the horse’s mouth, this being said be gentle and keep the reins level with the horse’s mouth, never going above the nose.
