Restraints
Restraints:
Types:
Chains:
-Nose – tread chain through the halter and attach on the other side of the face. For use when the horse is being pushy and will bully you when leading. Pull down on chain when needed, the amount of force needed is determined by you and the horse’s attitude.
-Under the chin – mainly used in the halter horse world. Used in the event of when you need a horse to raise its head
-Lip – more severe restraint. Often used on breeding stallions
-Through the mouth – Severe. Also used on breeding stallions
Twitches:
-Neck Twitch – pinch the skin on the neck and twist
-Ear Twitch – grab a hold of the ear. Remember, these can do damage to the ear
-Nose Twitch – Can be done with hand, rope with wood, wood and chain, or metal
NEVER let go of twitch, could swing and hit someone. The size of the twitch counts, the longer it is the more control. DO NOT leave on long. Can do major damage or become ineffective. NEVER put a twitch devise on the ear, consider chemical restraints.
When simply putting your horse in a halter or the crossties, you are putting them in a restraint. Other forms of restraints are verbal, simply talking to your horse can calm it down. Also using a sharp tone and keep a horse in its place.
You can use chemical restraints as well. Just keep in mind that these can alter the heart rate and other things so consider trying to record those things before using the restraint. Make sure you consider the horse’s age, weight, health, and task. You do not want to misjudge and overdose the horse.
Always remember that it is more important to keep in mind the health of the person working with your horse. You cannot replace the person, but you can replace the horse. Use a restraint when needed.
