Types of Facilities:
Boarding:
These are for people who do not or cannot have their barn. Boarding stables normally will have a pasture and turnout area for the horses. They will also have stalls either inside or outside for horses. At these boarding barns, there can be a variety of different options of service. The care that is required can range for them feeding and watering, cleaning out stalls, turning out or bringing in, checking for injuries, vaccines, and exercise. Depending on the amount they charge can depend on the amount they will do for you.
Breeding Farms:
Stallions are often held at these farms. People with horses looking to be bred can bring their mares to the farm and breed the mare under live cover. This is often times very dangerous for both mare and stallion. Normally people will take the mare to be artificially inseminated, or they can have the semen collected and shipped so they can do it at home. They have breeding/collection rooms they are kept clean and sanitary. They should have a dummy mare, which is a large padded mount so the stallion can breed. They use a collection cone to collect the semen and freeze it for later breeding. A main concern of these animals that they are kept healthy, clean, and well mannered. Some of these barns also will take pregnant mare right before they foal to have surveillance and experienced staff to help avoid any problems during the delivery. However, this can be very expensive for the owner of the mare.
Equine Vet Clinic:
Clinics need to have a specialized area for horses or bigger animals. These clinics normally have stalls, if animals need an extended stay. Cases of people needing to use these stalls would be a mare that was about to foal, a horse needing surgery, or care of a horse after surgery. These stalls are sterilized in the event of an animal with an infection would come to the clinic. It would have specialized equipment like x-ray, ultrasound, and other big equipment.
Training/Lessons:
Many high end facilities you will see are training and or lesson farms. At the training barns you will have either one trainer, or a group of trainers that run the barn. At these you can take your horse to get the training that you would like done to him. These barns are often very high dollar. These barns will normally have places where you can board your horse while it is getting trained. For lessons, the barns will usually provide you with the horse so you will be able to learn to ride, or learn another discipline. However, you can bring your own horse that they can give you lessons on or you can hire your own trainer. Lessons can vary greatly in prices depending on the type of riding and the barn.
