Long Reining:

Tools:
-Bridle is reins removed
-2 lunge lines in replace of the reins
-Tack up normally
-Helmet
-Gloves incase horse pulls the lunge lines
-Heels shoes
How to Log Rein:
-Start out in the arena incase horse were to get loose
-Begin the long rein lesson with lunging to establish voice commands
-Place the lunge lines on either side of the horse making sure they are through the stirrups
-Slowly walk back far enough so that the lunge lines are not below hocks
-So the horse can see you, stay to one side of it’s rear.
-Start by using only the walk and halt commands. As the horse advances, then you can advance with commands as well.
The key to mastering this skill is having a horse that can listen well to voice commands. In the long run, voice commands are a great thing for your horse to learn.
